1988: World Championship

Challenge Match

This world championship was the first truly international Trax championship with 2 regional tournaments, one in New Zealand and one in the USA. Tim Jefferies won the NZ tournament, and Donald Bailey, who was living in Santa Barbara at the time, won the USA tournament. A semifinal match between Tim and Donald was played over the telephone to determine who would be the challenger. Donald won the semi-final to become the 1988 challenger. The challenge match was also played over the telephone between Christchurch, NZ, and Santa Barabara, California. The games were played over several weekends, with a total telephone bill of several hundred dollars!

Andrew Butterfield won the match 6-1 to retain his title.
